Sounds can soothe you, fire your imagination, bring you to the heights of ecstasy or bring you down to the depths of your soul. Music is known to relax and to help in stress relief. In the right manner, music can bring lightness into a serious situation. Relaxing music therapy can heal, soothe and bring calm tot an agitated mind. Defining "relaxing music" seems a matter of personal choice. Some people find the serene sounds of the waterfall and chirping birds relaxing while others relax with their favorite hard rock. How Does It Work? The therapeutic effect of relaxing sounds seems to have a scientific definition of its own. When the human brain is relaxed it produces more alpha brain waves. When a person is stressed out, his brain produces more beta and theta waves. Beta and theta waves are faster changing brain waves than alpha waves. Within the fight-or-flee logic of a sudden stressful situation, the human brain processes seem to speed up to act faster. This can be helpful in short, specific moments, but it is counter productive when it becomes a chronically state of being. A relaxing tune can help with its sounds typically rich in frequencies that are similar to our alpha type brain waves. Bass Lesson #1 - Scales and Modes

Here's my first bass lesson, hope you enjoy! The scale we're using is the extended G Major scale. I use the extended version to stretch my fingers out much like a guitar player would. It makes your fingers stronger and gives you a bit of extra reach learning to use your second finger to reach over two frets, as well as strengthening the use of your pinky finger. One quick note: DO NOT play until you hurt. "No pain, no gain" is for sports, not music. If you're hurting after this stuff, you're either positioning your arms and hands wrong, or you need to work up to this stuff. Take a break and come back later if you can't readjust your hurting. Stop when it gets painful, and come back later. If not, you could be permanently damaging yourself. Don't do that. When practicing this scale, try to keep all the notes in one tone and volume. Don't be too hard with them at first. Keep your fingers nice and relaxed. Keep your thumb behind your middle finger as often as possible and you will be more steady with each note. Practice them softly and loudly as well. Try starting soft and building up with each note, and then try starting loud and dying off at the end of the scale. Make sure and keep your tempo the same, and your dynamics nice and steady. When attacking the strings with your right hand (left if you're a lefty), or your "pick hand", try to use a steady pattern of index, middle, index, middle to begin. Students at the Red Cross of Andalucia, section Baza, had to practice blood pressure measurements on visitors of the weekly market at Baza, Spain. Our son Daniel had to test his skills on his mother, Gaby. We knew her blood pressure was somewhat low (95-60) and this turned up indeed. Cover the Uninsured Week, 2011

On Sunday, March 5, 2011, dozens of OHSU students volunteered their time to provide free health screenings for Oregonians who are uninsured as part of the annual student-led Cover the Uninsured Week. The Health Screening Fair offered blood pressure checks, general medical exams, diabetes screening, haircuts and dental exams Almost 300 people received services that day.
