Blood Pressure Treatment

New Blood Pressure treatment guidelines are on the road.

recommendations for the treatment of hypertension may change as the result of a new study called ASCOT study. This study may also lead to major changes in how drugs lead BP to the doctor.

The Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT) compared the two drugs in combination (amlodipine perindopril more) with two other similar but a bit 'older styleDrugs (atenolol bendroflumethiazide more).

The study was interrupted for nearly five years early because patients treated with the combination above results are much less likely to cause myocardial infarction or stroke than those experienced in this treatment.

The study examined 19 000 patients began in 1997. The researchers from Imperial College London said that no exact number on the effectiveness of this new combination will be available until full results of the study were analyzed. They aim to publish an article in a medical journal called The Lancet in 2005.

The ASCOT study also looked at first drugs to treat cholesterol. This study lipid lowering arm (ASCOT-LLA) was also stopped prematurely in October 2002 after it showed that the majority of patients from atorvastatin to whether they had benefited from high cholesterol.

Only time will tell how significant these results, but it seems that this study will trigger significant changes in the way we lookin the choice of treatments. In the meantime - you should contact your doctor if you have concerns.
